Users of the Laboratory
The Laboratory is a forum for the professional stage art in Scandinavia. It is primarily concerned with theatre, performance and new cross-over genres, which may involve such artistic disciplines as dancing, music, visual arts or digital art.
The Laboratory is not a forum for the growth layer or development of new talents; however neither the growth layer nor young talents are banned from The Laboratory’s experiments. The focal point is simply not especially concerned with new talents or youth.
The Laboratory’s experiments can be launched in to ways:
- The employees of The Laboratory initiate and define a project, inviting artists to participate
- The Laboratory selects an external proposal and involves a sparring partner/process analyst to the experiment.
When The Laboratory chooses an external proposal, a series of preliminary meetings will be held with the parties involved to determine purpose, procedure and form of documentation. The focus, questions and methods are explicitly formulated before the start of an experiment. Pre-clarification and post-analysis are just as important as the conduction of the experiment itself.
The Laboratory believes in sharing the knowledge gathered from the experiments with a wider circle of professionals. The form of documentation is chosen from the individual experiment.Finances
All participants in The Laboratory’s experiments are paid – the current salary is 5000 DKK per week – and The Laboratory provides working space and technical equipment. Other expenses are not covered but The Laboratory will assist with finding cheap accommodation for the working period. Expenses for special technical equipment, costumes and the like will usually not be covered. We have chosen to spend our funds on what is most important: Buying people time and freedom.
Presentations and documentation
There are no public showings in connection with an experiment unless it is a specific part of the experiment. A showing for an invited audience can only be arranged after an agreement with both The Laboratory and the participating artists. The Laboratory poses no demands about presentation of the work. According to an agreement special obligations in form of passing on experiences and documentation can be present, e.g. in connection with conferences, seminars and the likes. All experiments are documented thoroughly and the documentation is accessible on this website.
