what is an experiment?

The Laboratory’s definition of an experiment:
A dynamic process that poses and reflects upon (a) question(s) which might be solvable or approachable through practice. In other words, it is a combination of practice and reflection.

Within this frame, an experiment or an examination can be closely linked to a concrete work of art, or it can be basic research starting from an outline. How can I dramatise the collected works of Rielke? What can this director and this conductor learn from each other? Which method is efficient when writing as a team? Etc etc.

It is essential for the experiment that no doubt exists as to who guides, who experiments and who observes the whole process. This must be settled and agreed upon in advance. Who will conduct the experiment, and who will act the part of the little white mice?
There can be one person or several people involved in the experiment but not everybody can act as an "experiment leader" simultaneously, and not everything can be experimented with at the same time.

Purpose, preparation, practice, reflection and evaluation have to be clearly defined in any experiment made by The Laboratory. This is not to avoid the chaotic, surprising and new; on the contrary, it is to sharpen the tools to grab and grasp it with.
